Anjali & Navya

Hi! I’m Anjali I love to dance—I’ve been learning Indian classical dance since I was 4. I also enjoy reading, acting, and traveling.

My scoliosis journey began in August of 2016. My family and I discovered I had scoliosis at a regular doctor’s appointment, and the whole situation took us by surprise. We had barely heard of scoliosis, and never imagined that I would have it. I was diagnosed with a 43 degree thoracic curve, and soon received a Minnesota brace. Initially, we were very worried, and my mom spent hours scouring the internet for helpful information. We received so much help from people across the country— people we didn’t even know! It felt comforting to know that someone had my back (ba-dum-psh!) and were there to support me. As I discovered new things, like Schroth therapy and Curvy Girls, I felt more confident, and realized how lucky I was to have this support. It’s challenging to live with scoliosis and wear an uncomfortable brace all the time, and it’s even harder when you don’t have anyone to talk to. No one should have to go through it alone, and I feel that Curvy Girls has given me a great opportunity to give the same help and encouragement to other girls going through scoliosis.

Hi, I’m Navya. I enjoy baking, skiing, spending time with friends, shopping, and traveling. When I was 11 years old, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with scoliosis. I was at a Pilates class with my mom when the instructor noticed I was struggling with certain movements and became concerned. She checked my back and urged us to get X-rays as soon as possible. The results showed that I had already developed two spinal curves, one measuring 45 degrees and the other 43 degrees. From then on, I began physical therapy four times a week, where I learned and practiced Schroth exercises. I was also fitted with a Boston brace that I had to wear 20 hours a day.

At one of my brace adjustment appointments, my mom and I saw a flyer for Curvy Girls. At first, I was hesitant to join because I was shy about sharing my experience. However, after learning more about the organization and with my mom’s encouragement, I realized how many other girls were going through the same challenges. That is when I decided to join the Sacramento Curvy Girls' group. From the very first meeting, I no longer felt alone; I felt welcomed, understood, and supported. Being part of that community gave me a huge confidence boost.

I stayed consistent with my physical therapy and brace wear, and after three years, I was able to stop the progression of my curves and even reduce both by 10 degrees. Today, I wear a night brace and continue my Schroth exercises regularly.

I hope to share my experience and help other girls know they are never alone. Being a leader to me is to provide the support I wish I had at the beginning of my diagnosis and to help create a safe, welcoming space where everyone feels heard, understood, and encouraged.
