My name is Julissa. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 10 years old and in 5th grade. I wear a Boston Brace that I named Rhonda. After I was diagnosed, I had to wear Rhonda for 16 hours every day. I started to take physical therapy weekly and do home exercises that my physical therapist gave me. On my most recent appointment, the doctor said my curve had improved and now I only have to wear Rhonda for 14 hours a day instead of 16. I enjoy painting, drawing, and am interested in trying pottery. I have an older brother, 3 birds, 1 dog, and I love them all.
When the doctor told me I had scoliosis I felt sad, confused, and lonely. Before I joined the Curvy Girls, I didn’t know anyone else that had it. When I went to my first meeting, it made me feel happy and that I wasn’t the only one. Being a part of the Curvy Girls made me feel included and part of a community. I want to make sure that other girls with scoliosis feel accepted and know that they are not alone in the journey.
