Natalie & Avery

At a regular doctor appointment, my doctor noticed my back was curved. She sent me to a specialist and I found out I had scoliosis. I was 12. A few weeks later, I got my brace, which I have to wear at least 18 hours a day. I also went to a physical therapist for a week and learned Schroth exercises that I have to do 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

My mom and I looked for a support group because I wanted to meet other girls going through the same thing as me, but we didn't find one, so I decided to start a Curvy Girls group for our area.

I like to read, dance, craft, play violin, and spend time with friends.

My name is Avery and I am 15 years old. I live in Lincoln, Nebraska with my parents and two dogs. When I'm not in school I enjoy swimming competitively, drawing, and painting. Some of my school activities include choir, orchestra, show choir, Student Council, and I am a school Ambassador. I'm also a member of Hive Helpers, a club focused on the well-being of the environment at my high school. During school breaks my family loves to travel to new places and catch any Broadway musicals we can find. Some of my favorites include Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and Be More Chill.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis during Spring Break of my 8th grade year. I wore a 3D printed Boston brace for 18 months to combat my S curve. Shortly after being diagnosed, my family ventured to Stevens Point, Wisconsin to learn the Schroth Exercises under the instruction of Beth Janssen,  PT. Since that summer, we have made 3 more trips back to help model for other physical therapists who are learning this amazing method of treating scoliosis. Currently, I am in the process of strengthening my back and decreasing the time I spend in my brace.

I am excited about becoming a Curvy Girl Leader. This opportunity will help me get to know other girls in my community and give us a common connection. I remember how I felt after being diagnosed and meeting other girls with scoliosis. As a leader, I'm excited to go out into our community and introduce others to the Curvy Girl experience. I love sharing my story and learning other people's stories in turn.
