My name is Sydney and I am 12 years old. I was diagnosed with scoliosis during my 10-year-old well- check. After 6 months, my curves progressed to the point where I needed to wear a Boston brace. I wore the brace 23 hours a day and most people didn’t even know I had it on. Although it was uncomfortable, I got used to it. After 1 ½ years of wearing the brace, my parents and I tried different types of therapies including visiting with yoga masters and we even went to Wisconsin for physical therapy. In February 2018, I had VBT surgery at Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. I am doing great and I am so thankful to not have to wear the brace any longer.
My mom starting researching organizations for scoliosis and this is how we found out about Curvy Girls. I didn’t know another person that had scoliosis and I had no one to talk to about my thoughts or feelings. Thankfully, we met Emily Campbell and she has mentored me. I hope to be able to grow the Oklahoma chapters of Curvy Girls. I also want to be a leader that my school district and other community leaders can turn to with questions regarding young girls and their health.
