Cape Town South Africa
My name is Kerryn. I am currently 15 years old and I was diagnosed with Scoliosis when I was 9 years old (Grade Four).
I have been riding horses since I was three and I don’t plan on stopping. I also sing in my school choir and play guitar.
I had really bad back pain for a few months which was the reason for going to the doctor. We were referred to many doctors, but eventually found the one I go to now. I was given a back brace to wear for 23 hours a day. I was also given Shcroth exercises as well.
Recently, I found a Biokinetist who I visit weekly for my Schroth exercise check-ups. I finally had the chance to meet other girls who are going through the same thing as I am, which is an amazing experience.
I am now on my 6th year of bracing and only have to wear my brace when I sleep. I wanted to become a Curvy leader as I went through the first years of my Scoliosis alone and I don’t want other girls to have to do that when they could have support and meet other girls with Scoliosis.
Johannesburg South Africa
My name Is Aphelele Anele. I'm 18 years of age from South Africa and live in Johannesburg.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 16 but before that I use to experience major back pains and I thought to myself no it's just normal. Little did I know that it was more than that. I had a curve of 20° in 2016 and progressed to 35°. In 2018, my doctor recommended a surgery and I did it in December 2018.
My scoliosis journey has been a tough one, as I never got support from friends and family. All the appointments I use to attend alone, so I want to help the Curvy Girls of Johannesburg by having a support group.
