Conoce a Miriana y Vanessa
Hola, me llamo Miriana y tengo 17 años.
Hi! My name is Miriana and I'm 17 years old. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with scoliosis after my parents noticed that my shoulders were uneven. Since then it's been a long journey through doctors, chiropractors and masseuses. I never wore a brace or anything to stop the curves from progressing. So, now they've decided that I need the operation, and after going through a huge process we finally have a date-- January 24th.
I joined Curvy Girls because I decided that I would no longer wait sitting in the bleachers. I may not have had someone who understood what I was going through but I want to be able to give that to other girls. Scoliosis doesn't affect only one or two girls, so we shouldn't have to go through this alone. Together we are strong!
Some facts about me are that I really enjoy singing, writing and basically everything artistic-wise. I used to do tennis, but now I do yoga since it really helps with building up my muscles and stretching. I'm about to finish high school, and I'm planning on attending University next year to pursue a career in Communications and hopefully specialize in Journalism.
I can't wait to meet all of you and I really hope to be able to make a change, as small as it may be.
I love to volunteer at animal shelters. I am very passionate about helping animals. I also love nature, art, drawing, watching movies and shows, and painting. I am a big Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek fan.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 6th grade. My doctor noticed that my shoulders were uneven, so she asked me to bend over. She saw that one of my shoulders and hips were uneven, one of my legs was longer than the other, and my spine was really curved. She told me to go to a doctor in Stuart, FL. The first time that I saw him, he told me that I had 38-degree curvature. He told me that people with 40 degrees or higher, will have to get surgery. As soon as he told me that, I was relieved because I thought I wouldn't be needing surgery. I was also scared because I was only two degrees off. I had to wear a brace while sleeping. After a while, I visited Dr. Murphy again and he told me my curvature had decreased to less than 30 degrees. The doctor said that the brace was working and to come back to see if the brace can lower my curvature as straight as possible. After wearing my brace every night, having difficulty breathing and moving around, I went to the doctor again. He did not recognize me and told me that I had 71 degrees and said that I needed surgery. I started to cry because the idea of surgery scared me. I went to another doctor in Orlando called Dr. Phillips. He confirmed that I had 71 degrees and I had to get an MRI. One day, I received a call from Orlando Health that my surgery would be on August 15. During the months of waiting for my big day, I was nervous, cried, and felt alone because I didn't have friends or knew anybody who was going through the same thing as me.
On August 15, I had to wake up really early to go to the hospital to get ready for surgery. My surgery took about 4 hours and I had to stay at the hospital for 4 or 5 days. Almost 5 years later after surgery, I still feel impacted by scoliosis because I constantly have to think what will make my back stronger and decided to live a healthier lifestyle. In 2017, I moved to Lima, Peru.
I want to give emotional support to girls who are starting their scoliosis journey to let them know that they are not alone.
