Hi, my name is Madeleine and I am 10 years old, going into 5th grade. I am originally from Seattle, Washington, but we are living in Pune, India for the next three years for my Dad’s job. I am very active - I play tennis, golf and enjoy swimming. I take Bollywood dance class and perform often.
We spent this summer in Seattle, WA. and my Mom wanted me and my sisters to have an annual check-up. The Dr. took a look at our backs to make sure we didn’t have curvature of the spine. First he checked me and noticed there was a slight curve in my back. That day – I had an x ray. Half an hour later – they came back with the results. I have 24 degrees of thoracolumbar scoliosis. My Mom and I were shocked! I immediately got measured for a back brace. I chose the color for my back brace… a fun pink/orange/blue/red design. A few weeks later my brace was ready. I have worn it one week now and am almost wearing it as tight as it needs to be.
I would like to be a leader because I have faced the difficulties of wearing a back brace. I know how it feels, and I want to help provide support. I also like being a leader and helping other people. I want the girls in India to think they are not alone – not the only ones that have scoliosis. Because India is such a developing country, I would like to try to figure out how to help girls who cannot afford a back brace if they need one. If the girls need surgery, I will tell them to be strong and believe in themselves. I also hope to make new friends while I am leading the group and supporting other girls.
