Meet Jordan & Kamila
District of Columbia
Hello! I am Jordan and I am 15 years old. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was eleven years old. I started going to meetings at 12. In July of 2017, I was told that my spine had jumped up to a seventy-degree range and that I would have to have spinal fusion surgery. I worried that I would have to stop doing one of the things I loved which was dance. However, my friend who also had the surgery does Irish dance and I realized that if I work, hard having scoliosis surgery would not stop me from doing what I love. I had surgery November of 2017 and since then my Curvy Girls' group has been extremely supportive in my path of recovery.
I decided to be a leader of the Washington D.C. group because I love encouraging people that scoliosis does define who they are and it does not prevent them from doing what they love. Until I joined the group which was about a year after I discovered I had scoliosis, I hadn't known anyone who had it. I joined Curvy Girls because I felt alone and now I do not want other girls to feel alone. I want to help them see how they can grow and benefit from and with others who have scoliosis.
Hello! My name is Kamila and I am 14. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 12 years old. I have been wearing a SpineCor brace ever since and it has helped keep my curve from growing. Even with scoliosis, I can still enjoy doing the things I love most, which are playing the violin and swimming.
When I was first diagnosed, I didn’t think anyone would understand what I was going through, but Curvy Girls helped me feel that I wasn’t alone. It is great to be able to talk to other girls who know what it’s like to live with scoliosis. Being a leader means being a role model to the girls in my area. I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to help and support other members as they come to the meetings. Hope to see you there!
